Although MacOS has an automatic switching setting between light and dark mode, it is not great, as many Mac users resort to Nightowl. The app allows you to switch dark and light based on a variety of operators, keep some applications in light mode all the time, and switch between conditions using Hotkey.
While Nightowl is good in what he is doing,MainThe downside is that the app appears to be harmful programs now, which usually makes adding computers to people to robot networks without explicit approval. You should go without saying that you must cancel its installation immediately. Many Nightowl features are combined into MacOS these days anyway, so don’t lose much if you get rid of them.
What happened with Nightowl?
The web developer, Taylor Robinson, noted that Nightowl has been sold to a new company, \”TPE.FYI LLC \\\”. Although this itself is not necessarily worrying, Robinson has discovered that the new owners have changed the Nightowl service conditions: Now, the application automatically adds your computer to Botnet for \\ \”Market Research \\\”.
If you have a newer version of the Nightowl installed, you will notice that the application runs a launch agent on your Mac, apparently to update it automatically. Robinson notes that this launch agent does much more than just check up updates and destroy reports. You can check the blog post to know the technical details of how to add you to the robots.
Being part of the robots allows harmful limbs to spy on your computer and use it for things like DDOS attacks. It is not clear whether Nightowl Botnet is doing this exactly: Robinson notes that this may be to collect data for a type of ticket platform for concerts. The terms and conditions of the application show that it can spy on you, and send these data to a variety of third parties:
The Nightowl app enables users to share traffic on the Internet by adjusting their network settings for use as an online traffic gate. In addition, the user device works as a portal of the Nightowl application, including companies specialized in web and market research, senior economic officials, brand protection, content delivery, cybersecurity, etc.
Regardless of the purpose of this data collection, you may consider it a flagrant violation of your privacy.
How to uninstall Nightowl from your MAC
If you install Nightowl, you should just pull it into the garbage to remove it. Instead, Robinson shared a guaranteed way to completely uninstall it from the Mac. This may be a little frightening for some people because it includes running peripheral orders, but you just have to copy the following orders and paste them in a new terminal window:
sudo killall NightOwllaunchctl unload ~/Library/LaunchAgents/NightOwlUpdater.plistsudo killall AutoUpdatesudo rm -rf /Applications/NightOwl.app/~/Library/LaunchAgents/NightOwlUpdater.plissudo zsh -c “rm /Users/*/Library/LaunchAgents/NightOwlUpdater.plist
Once you do this, you will get rid of this application (and threaten harmful programs) forever. Dan Moren, in a post on the Six Colors blog, indicates that the old versions of Nightowl do not contain march files, so it seems that the robot code has been added to more modern versions of the application. But it is still good to delete the application forever.
